Costs

Lesson costs are currently £3/person/lesson.  We have always ran a PAYG system.  There is an annual CMA/AMA membership fee of £15, this covers the necessary insurances and membership costs (once a student has decided to progress).

Uniform

White V Neck Suit (Gi) with white bottoms are the current requirement for grading and preferable training.  When not wearing a White Gi for training, white bottoms (from Gi) and a club T-shirt is the norm.  Ask for more details.

Protective Equipment

From a beginner belt level (white), having boxing gloves with attached thumbs (10oz) are standard – these are used for hands only boxing/pad work/sparring.  From the Green Belt level and above, Feet Protectors are also required.

BASICS

All training starts with the basics and fundementals, the main core techniques which are used during our training journey.  Positioning, footwork, stance, blocks, hand and leg strikes are coached until a students technique is correct.  As a student progresses – the techniques (and applications) also get more complex.

Combinations of techniques (or forms) are also practised as a student progresses.  These are the combination of flowing moves designed to be effective against a single or multiple opponents.  The complete form or forms are unlikely to be ever used (like all forms, Kata`s, patterns) but their sub sections which are practised can become very effective.

SPARRING & PARTNER WORKING

All sparring is monitored controlled light touch.  Early belts practise imaginary sparring (or shadow sparring).  As a student progresses the amount of partner working increases along with the technical demands.  Sparring can be physically demanding, this helps in increasing general fitness.  We practise movement so we avoid being hit in the first place (no statues), your balance will also improve.  The students ability to `block, move and counter` is coached until it feels second nature.  As a student progresses, the level of sparring naturally becomes more advanced to suit the skill level.

PAD WORK

Pad work training is used to coach students in many ways.  Hitting a target (not always stationary) helps in `hand to eye` coordination, same applies for leg work.  The control of striking power develops conditioning, strength and form of any hand and leg techniques.  Coordination and power are useless and wasteful unless a student learns from correct technique – form and technique needs to be coached, practised and adjusted when needed.

FITNESS

Every lesson starts with a warm up and stretching (and subsequent cool down at the end).  During training your fitness levels will naturally increase, you will get fitter and one of the usual (great) side effects of this is more calories burned.  This can aid weight loss (calories in versus calories out), exercise and training is proven to alter a students mood (in a positive way).
