Who are we?

Coastal Martial Arts (CMA) was previously part of another martial arts association.  We celebrated our 1st birthday in July 2023.  We are a family friendly club which collectively trains hard whilst having fun whilst doing so.   We have students from 5 to 55 years old actively training with us.  We believe that our lessons should be :

– Safe, all students are safe during training, we maintain and uphold the guidance from our governing body (A.M.A) and the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts organisation

– Progressive, we assess regulary (approx every 12 weeks) and show progression through a comprehensive and established belt system whilst working from an established syllabus

– Fun, all lessons are normally fun, never dull and rarely the same

– Cost effective, lessons are `Pay As You Go` with an annual low cost license/membership fee, there are no fixed monthly contracts or commitments!  Regular assessment costs are kept as low as practical, currently at £15/assessments

What do we expect?

Attitude

We expect courtesy for each other during training (if not, CMA is not the place for you).  Training in any martial art needs a combination of commitment and effort – this leads to improved physical/mental progression and well being.  As a student progresses they will develop friendships, improve thier martial arts ability, increase fitness and mental well being.

Uniform

We grade wearing a white V neck Gi (white top and white pants) along with our hard earned coloured belts.  During training – club t-shirts and belts are a minimum along with 10oz boxing gloves (attached thumbs).  Feet protectors are also needed for those higher in the belt system.

Software tracking

CMA have designed their own in house software application which records attendance, coaching hours, belt eligibility to name but a few.  The application keeps the necessary records and maintains proper, correct and auditable pathways for all our students journeys.

Basics

Your journey starts with the basics and fundementals of the art.  Learning how to move, block, executing hand & leg strikes – they are all drilled & practised.  Students in the early belts learn alot quickly.  Solo and partner working with aids (strike pads, paddles, focus mits etc) are used throughout the training.  Warmups, cool downs and stretching all form parts of every lesson.

Forms & Combinations

As students progress through the comprehensive syllabus, the ability to practise and be graded carrying out a `form` is conducted.  A `form` is a logical and practical sequence of martial art moves which can in part (or in full) be used in a sparring session or in a non-consensual conflicts (essentially a fight).  Practising forms helps to embed muscle memory, serves to improve balance, fitness and general technique and fluidity.

Sparring, Pad & Partner Work

Students from their first few lessons will start to practise sparring.  All sparring is controlled and light touch.  Early belts practise no contact sparring focusing on safe space and movement.  As fitness and skill levels increase the sparring also increases to match the attained levels.  All sparring is closely monitored by instructors.
